The mountain bike trail at Llys-y-Fran is a short and fun route best suited to the less experienced mountain biker or families looking for a fun active day out. The trail is 10.5km in length so is long enough to feel like a good workout but not too challenging for mountain bikers with an average fitness level.
The trail basically takes you around the perimeter of the reservoir and includes some lovely views across the water. There are many small picnic areas along the route providing plenty of opportunities to stop for a rest or a snack.
The terrain is largely wide, gravelly and muddy trails which would be fun for new comers to the sport but watch out for some of the steep and slippery climbs. These are difficult to ascend without getting off to push but provide a fun challenge. The many stream crossings also add an interesting element to this trail. Experienced mountain bikers looking for an adrenalin rush are likely to be disappointed with this trail and are better off heading to nearby Brechfa or Afan Forest Park.
